Book Review: Lies and Wedding

Image
Lies and Wedding is a fun, light read that is basically Crazy Rich [Half] Asians (by the same author of Crazy Rich Asians[CRA], Kevin Kwan).  As a big fan of CRA, I generally enjoyed reading Lies and Wedding and found it more memorable than Sex and Vanity, but not as memorable as CRA. The formula is essentially the same as Crazy Rich Asians, rich people have family drama, answer behind drama revealed towards end, super predictable ending, and basically similar characters (I guess good for anyone who loves Eleanor Young).  This book is for anyone who:  is a fan of Crazy Rich Asians loves family drama into travel, fashion, Selling Sunset/real estate, or watching those dream wedding shows. Some of my favorite parts included mentions of local spots on the Big Island of Hawaii, LA, and just imagining different opulent weddings. While Kwan does highlight glitz and glamour and drops a gazillion brand names, he also shows the dark side of money, and some of the lows of the b...

16 hours in Singapore

Image
Before going to Joey's wedding in Bali, Janet and I touched down in Singapore for 16 hours, which I used to basically preview my Crazy Rich Asians (CRA) themed Dirty 30 next year. Some highlights: eating at the CRA food market, drinking at the top of Marina Bay Sands, and meeting some of Janet's old friends! Here's an hour-by-hour breakdown of my 2/3 of a day layover in Singapore: 6:34 PM | Land in Changi, go through Immigration, get confused trying to find pickup area for Grab (Asian lyft/uber) Hour 1: 7:30 PM | Check into Carlton City Hotel - shower after 17 hour flight, change Here's me in the fancy lobby while Janet checked us in Hour 2: 8:40 PM | Newton Food Center - we got picked up by Janet's friends and went to the Food Center where they filmed Crazy Rich Asians! On our table: sea snails, satay, sting ray, chili crab, veggies, chicken wings, sambal, and Tiger beer. My favorite was actually the sting ray even though I'm not ...

Why you should see Ronny Chieng

Image
Ronny Chieng (The Daily Show, Crazy Rich Asians) stopped by Sacramento as part of his "Tone Issues" tour, and I got "VIP tickets" to see him last night [literally front and center and my foot could kick the stage]. (From his instagram.)  I don't know how to move my mouth, like Henry Golding in CRA. The show was great, and I'd recommend seeing him not only because he'll make you laugh, but you can also learn a lot about America, race, and why everything in life is meaningless. (Also this blog is totally dumb and ironic because he might have mentioned that bloggers are a-holes who have nothing better to do- which is basically true of my life as a Sacramento resident). Below are more detailed reasons why you should get tickets to his show: 1. You'll see other funny accompanying acts such as Emily Catalano and Chris Martin (yes from the UK, no not in Coldplay). I loved how Emily covered topics such as Costco and relationships, and she ...

All I want for Christmas (2018)

Image
Before this year's wishlist (if you want to see it, scroll down) I'd like to reminisce about what I posted about what I wanted for Christmas in 2017 . Looking back, I'm thinking WTF. While I fondly remember dividing my list to make things simpler, my list was pretty dumb: NON-MATERIAL THINGS Happiness Generally, making time for things I enjoy/not taking life too seriously What? I need to wish for things that are more tangible.  Life Size 2 to actually come out in 2018 and be comparable to the original This one IS coming true, and I have yet to see it but based on teasers , it looks like it will be a trainwreck.  Quality time with friends and family  Little things not on my  #30GoalsBefore30  list, like getting meals or hiking, etc. Being in top 5 of Gumball Rally 2018 w/ Andrew FAILED - we got 13th, but it was actually still a fun day attempting to ride all the rides at Disneyland despite not being in top 5. Professional success/gro...

Crazy Rich Asians: What I would've tweeted if I live-tweeted the movie [SPOILERS]

Image
I love the Crazy Rich Asians novel by Kevin Kwan (I am planning my dirty 30 in 2 years themed on the book and also stupidly made it one of my 30 goals before 30 to go to its movie premiere - I was in Europe though so that was a fail) regardless- I was very excited for the movie. I have seen it twice, and I was thoroughly entertained despite thinking the book is way better. Below is what I would've live-tweeted (if I truly had no shame- but I am Asian, just not crazy or rich)- and disclaimer- there are spoilers . Also the pictures below my tweets may be subject to copyright. But first- some screenshots of what I did tweet while watching the previews: During WB credits intro- tapping my feet to this big-band style Chinese song, this soundtrack is already 🔥 and I'm going to LOVE this movie  Wishing Eddie was in this London scene like the book, after re-reading the book for the 4th time I need to lower my expectation that they will copy the book  The entire mo...
