Kimberly Akimbo
What is it like being someone that has a rare disease of physically aging incredibly quickly and that learns they may not have much longer to live? Kimberly Akimbo is a more modern comedy musical that tells the story of high schooler Kimberly who doesn't quite fit in with her peers and has a dysfunctional family.
Generally light-hearted while touching interesting themes, there were a few cute moments and songs. I got lottery tickets to see it with orchestra seats, and would recommend if you are tired of old musical tropes, like(d) Glee, are a theater kid/socially awkward, or relate to family drama/deal with family expectations vs. living the life you hoped.
The company songs are the general highlights - such as "This Time" and "Great Adventure". I think this show won so many Tonys because it is for theater people: refreshing compared to a revival, the characters have certain quips and most people can relate to the difficult or unenjoyable aspects of high school. Overall, this is a family friendly show and while some of the songs weren't as memorable, I did appreciate that this show tries to introduce a modern story and touches on interesting themes.
