Huso by Buddha Lo

On a Friday in June I was fortunate to get a 5 PM reservation at Huso [2 time Top Chef winner Buddha Lo's restaurant] and I would recommend for anyone who likes caviar/willing to splurge on a nice meal in NYC.

The [end of spring] tasting menu was a great experience and quite lengthy - and I was fortunate to get to meet Buddha at the very end!

Cost:
Per person for just the tasting menu - $265
add-ons [truffle $90 or extra caviar $120] - some courses come with truffle and caviar already

Dining Room view from corner table:

Drinks:
Dirty Rich Martini + Jasmine Milk Punch

Jasmine Heirloom White Tea (ordered mid meal)
Pure Jasmine, Honey, Green Bamboo, Raw Almonds
White Tea, Fuding, China

Sample of menu for drink pairings:
Standard
Premium
Non-alcoholic

Meal:

First course
King Salmon - Creme Cru, Kaluga Hybrid Caviar

Second Course

Lobster Tart - Trout Roe

Third Course
French Onion Soup 2 Ways

Fourth Course
Young Potatoes , Smoked Sturgeon, Osetra Caviar

I liked this better than Thomas Keller's Oyster + Pearl caviar dish.

Fifth Course
Bread & Butter - Foie Gras, Shallots, Brioche

I am not a foie gras fan, but the bread was warm and good.

Sixth Course
Bluefin Tunam, Blood Orange, Watermelon Radish
Elysian Field flowers

I loved the flowers on the presentation, but fish tasted a little off to me.

Seventh Course
Mushroom paired well with the scallop. Details on asparagus was crazy. Sauce was good.

Eighth Course

Dry Aged Duck, Rhubarb, Alsace Bacon
Maybe my favorite course - the duck had some Asian spices and was really good

Ninth Course

Lamb En Croute, Artichoke, Green Asparagus

I liked this lamb better than Thomas Keller's Elysian Lamb at French Laundry.

Tenth/11/12 (Desserts)

Apricot, Sheep's Milk Yogurt, Magnolia Honey

Oishii Koyo Berry, White Chocolate, Pine

Petit Fours

Valrhona Chocolate and caviar

Tiramisu "caviar"

End of meal + Kitchen Tour

I don't remember what this drink was, I was too excited to be in presence of Buddha Lo!

We chatted with Buddha for a few minutes, and he was kind enough to sign the menu and the caviar dessert tin!

Overall thoughts:
The food was beautiful and I was actually really full - while sometimes prettier than it tasted, most of the meal was very solid and it wasn't until I went into the kitchen and saw chefs twirling decor on the asparagus or flowers on the radish petals that I appreciated the artistry of the food.
My friend Jocelyn went the week after me and got full send, which is a little bit too extra and the truffle can make the food look demonic.
Huso was one of my most memorable meals of the year and I hope it gets a star {or more} soon!
